CORPUS - BASED MATERIALS: A PASSING TREND OR A PERMANENT TOOL?

Hi everybody your teaching and learning blogger İlayda is here again!! I am here again after a long time, if you have not checked my latest post do not forget to check it! Now you know why I am here again. I had to do a corpus - based material with my friends as an assignment for my class. For those who do not know what a corpus is, corpus is a collection of both written and spoken texts. When you search for the word 'apple' in a corpus, it will show you every sentence in the internet that includes the word 'apple' in it. Me, and my friends Meryem and Eylül needed to create a corpus-based material. We chose the topic clothes and we focused on idioms with clothes, idioms that have clothe names in them. After a short research we came up with six idioms, you can see them in the material. To activate learners' background knowledge, we started our material with a guessing activity. We wanted them to guess the idioms' meanings. After that we give a part to corpus use introductions. We wanted students to go through corpus and look for the sentences that has the idioms in the material in it. After that, we wanted them to match the idioms with their meanings. Then, we provided a fill in the blank activity by using sentences from corpus which made our material teacher mediated. We wanted to make sure students used corpus and did not guess the idioms by looking at their meanings, we wanted them to write the sentences from corpus that made them sure about the meanings. In the end, we gave a production activity which students choose three idioms they learnt and use them in a sentence. We also entegrated our material to a lesson plan.

In our material we provided a QR code. We made sure that it works, however it is technology you never know when a problem will occur. If QR code does not work teacher can make students search for corpus by using a browser.

I think corpus is a great oppurtunity for not only teachers but only students. Variety in language teaching is very significant. By using corpus, students can see differently formed sentences.

See you next time.

Your learning and teaching blogger,

İlayda.
